Striking comments! Healthcare is in the midst of long term structural changes likely to favor larger, well managed Providers. Margin pressures from seemingly every front are hastening new alliances. We’ll examine the current level of M&A activity and the drivers for these transactions. We’ll also talk about specific State-level forces accelerating the consolidation. In 1998, she completed her Masters of Business Administration from Auburn University. Her career has included working with not-for-profit health systems and large private for-profit physician owned organizations. Tracy has held several leadership roles during her career. Those roles include Controller for a small health system that included acute and long-term care beds. She was the Chief Financial Officer for a private for-profit physician system. She has been with Baptist Health since January 2011.

11:00 AM Using Registration Accuracy to Improve Revenue Cycle Operations – Paul Sirrosh, CEO Database Solutions, Inc.

The complexity of today's revenue cycle requires Revenue Cycle Managers to understand and monitor several Key Performance Indicators (KPI's). While registration data entry and verification errors are typically the #1 complaint of business office staff and the root cause up to 50% of denials, Registration Quality and Accuracy is often overlooked as a viable KPI with direct financial impact on denial rates, clean claim rates, AR Days, unnecessary PFS rework and claims processing costs. This session will make a case and explain methods for tracking, calculating and reporting Registration Accuracy as a KPI for your facility and Patient Access Department. Learn how Registration Accuracy directly affects better-known KPI’s such as Net Days in AR, Clean Claim Rate, Denial Rate, Claims Processing Cost, DNFB, and Bad Debt. Automated QA processes will be discussed that enable Patient Access Leaders to monitor individual, team and organizational performance, identify training needs and set goals to improve employee performance.

Paul Shorrosh, MSW, MBA has over 20 years of revenue cycle management experience. While Revenue Cycle Director at a 250-bed facility in Mobile, AL, Paul saw the disconnect between the front and back end of his departments and developed unique auditing and data reporting methods to improve registration accuracy, maximize eligibility verification, improve POS Collections and empower Patient Access to improve revenue cycle KPI’s. Focusing on prevention rather than management of denials, and turning complaints into front-end audit capabilities, Paul discovered the power of early detection, exception-based relevant-only alerting and self-correction of errors prior to billing. Automating a comprehensive QA process improved financial performance, revenue cycle KPI’s, morale, and staff competency. Today Paul is Founder and CEO of Database Solutions, Inc. (aka; AccuReg Software) based in Mobile, AL and he is still on a mission to impact hospital financial performance by transforming and empowering Patient Access departments.

MJ Klimas, Managing Director, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Ms. Klimas joined the bank in 2005 and works for Banc of America Public Capital Corp, the Bank’s historic funding platform for tax advantaged financings. MJ is responsible for creating the overall strategy for Healthcare, Institutions and Government Finance while leading the national originations team. A west coast region manager, 14 marketing officers and two transaction managers report to Ms. Klimas.

Before joining the bank, MJ was Vice President and Region Sales Manager at GE Healthcare Financial Services. In that capacity she was responsible for healthcare equipment finance sales management for a seven state region. MJ also spent 12 years at CitiCapital with Citi’s healthcare equipment finance group. MJ graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing.

Sharon Nobles, CFO, Baptist Healthcare

Sharon has served Baptist Health Care of Pensacola, Florida and worked in Treasury for the past ten years. In this role, she is responsible for the day to day cash management of the organization, as well as oversight of the investment portfolio and pension assets. In addition, she is responsible the organization’s debt financings and derivative management, compliance reporting, and capital acquisition process, and other related matters that ensure the integrity of the System’s fiscal strength. Previously, Sharon

worked in Internal Audit and served as the Director of Accounting for Baptist Health Care. Sharon has a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of West Florida. Sharon is a CPA and holds the Certified Treasury Professional designation, as well as a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. She worked in both public accounting and banking prior to joining health care.

Charles R. Cleaver, Assistant Vice President of Finance, Martin Memorial
Health System

Mr. Cleaver joined Martin Memorial Health System in 1984. Mr. Cleaver’s responsibilities include direct supervision of payroll, accounts payable, general ledger, reimbursement, budget, cost accounting, billing, admitting, scheduling, physician billing, materials, and all treasury functions. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Ball State University and a Master of Business Administration from Florida Institute of Technology. Mr. Cleaver is a member of the American Institute of C.P.A.’s, a member of the Florida Institute of C.P.A.’s, a member of the Indiana C.P.A. Presenters’ Bios
Grant Ostlund, Managing Director, Ponder & Co
Mr. Ostlund has provided services to the healthcare industry for over twenty seven years. As a member of the Healthcare Finance Group at Lehman Brothers for over nine years, Mr. Ostlund provided investment banking services to hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers, physician practice groups, and long-term care facilities. Mr. Ostlund joined Ponder in 2002 where he has continued his work with the healthcare industry. He has participated in the public issuance of over $10 billion of capital. Mr. Ostlund started his healthcare career as a member of Ernst & Young’s Consulting Practice where he developed financial feasibility studies, acquisition analyses, debt capacity studies, credit evaluation analyses and cost accounting studies for healthcare organizations. Mr. Ostlund received his Bachelors degree from the University of Florida and Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He successfully completed the Certified Public Accountant’s exam.

Eb LeMaster, Managing Director, Ponder & Co
Mr. LeMaster has over 15 years of investment banking and corporate development experience. His corporate finance experience includes over 50 merger and acquisition transactions, public equity and debt offerings, and private placements. Prior to joining Ponder & Co., he was Vice President of Development for Ardent Health Services, a hospital management company with 12 acute care hospitals and over 2,100 beds. Ardent was also one of the largest providers of inpatient behavioral services prior to the sale of the division in July 2005. At Ardent, he focused on acute care and behavioral acquisitions and worked extensively on the development of a physician joint venture hospital, the consolidation of two hospitals, and the purchase, sale and development of medical office buildings. Before joining Ardent, he spent eight years in investment banking most recently as director with Robert W. Baird & Co. He focused on M&A transactions, public equity and debt offerings and private placements. He holds Bachelors and MBA degrees from Vanderbilt University.

The Clinical and Financial Impact of ICD-10

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Dwan Thomas-Flowers, MBA, RHIA, CCS, is a Health Information Management (HIM) professional with experience in various areas of the HIM field including coding, quality management, education, Joint Commission survey preparation and management. She received her B.S. in Medical Record Administration at the University of Central Florida and her MBA from Webster University. She holds multiple credentials from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) including registered health information administrator, certified coding specialist and AHIMA approved ICD-10-CM/PCS certified trainer.

Currently, Dwan is a Special Projects Manager in Revenue Cycle Services responsible for implementation of training for ICD-10 across the major group practices for the Mayo Clinics. She also leads computer-assisted coding efforts, the Clinical Documentation Improvement Programs and facilitates the Utilization Management committee. Dwan assures integration and cross training of staff in both the hospital and physician office coding environments. She also supports training and medical staff development regarding documentation improvement efforts. In her previous role, she managed the charge capture and coding unit and participated in various committees including but not limited to Health Information Coordinating Committee, Reimbursement Task Force and the Medicare Compliance & Strategy Group.
